Swoon. One whole word to exactly sum up how I was feeling during this session. We took a risk going forward with this session, the forecast hadn’t been very predictable, but in the end, it really showed up for us. Something about some stormy skies over water that just creates a different ethereal look. I mean, don’t get me wrong–you all know I love me some golden hour but sometimes my heart is captivated by the clouds that often cover our little part of the west coast.
What I love about this family is that they aren’t afraid of hugging and kissing and snuggling–even as their girls continue to grow. I know it’s not always the most natural thing to do, especially with a camera in your face…but somehow, they manage to make it look effortless. This is what I’m going to be pushing more and more for this coming year. I want you and your kids to forget more that I am there and embrace the moments just as they come.
Mom and dad, this part is for you. YOU hold the key to how sessions move along. When you step in front of my camera, just let the chaos unfold. Don’t scold, don’t use this time to punish or correct (I mean, within reason). Just go with it, smile–relax and enjoy your kiddos as they are. Often times, I can shoot in a way or angle that no one will know if there is a gigantic meltdown happening. And sometimes, those meltdowns can actually produce some beautifully, tender moments. You just have to trust and BE. Be you! Allow your kids to be themselves. Let them run, let them explore, let them laugh and giggle–pick them up, tickle them, kiss them….best of all, play with them. Because one of these days….I know, I know it sounds so cliche….but one these days they will grow up and you won’t be able to scoop them up into your arms anymore. Babies don’t keep. Trust me, I tried.
Oh, and one more thing. Let’s just leave cheese out of it. Cheese is for the sandwich not photos. Nothing gives a more forced looking smile then telling a kid to say “cheese”. Poop on the other hand…..I’m all for asking kids to say that, lol. Because it usually produces genuine laughter and smiles. Definitely not above a little poop talk over here (remember, mom of all boys here…I’m sure I have heard it all.)
Here is what you get when no cheese is involved. Raw. Beauty.
